August 2008 Darwinist Censors / Mendel's Accountant newsletter

TBSE Logo

The Darwinists are at it again.  As misleading as usual, they are telling anyone in the media who will listen and report that the dastardly conservative Christians on the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) are trying to "insert strengths and weaknesses" language into the Texas science standards.  A militant Darwinist recently told me that their side was preparing for "war".

The reporters should at least try to get their facts straight.  The "strengths and weaknesses" language of the Texas TEKS that they warn about in near-apocalyptic manner, has been in place since at least the 1990s, and in other forms, the 1980s!

The "real story" is that Darwinists have already been lobbying your elected officials to REMOVE currently existing "scientific weaknesses" language from the standards!

While there are certainly MANY important issues surrounding us today, we hope that you will join our efforts to protect our "weaknesses" language.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter.

Thank you!

Mark

"If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved; and to be steady on all the battlefield besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point."
- Martin Luther, quoted by Francis A. Schaeffer -

SCIENCE:  MENDEL'S ACCOUNTANT

GregorMendelCan random mutations followed by natural selection (the two halves of the neo-Darwinian hypothesis) really account for the diversity of life we see around us?  Numerous experiments have failed to confirm this over past decades (irradiated drosophila melanogaster fruit flies, starved e.coli bacteria, etc.).

A new tool has been released by a team of researchers called Mendel's Accountant, named appropriately after Gregor Mendel, the Austrian considered to be the father of genetics.  This is a computer modeling system that seeks to model random mutation and subsequent natural selection based on what we know about genetics already.

The sophisticated model of mutations to the genome and their effects may be tweaked by the user to explore various effects, such as reproduction rates, population sizes, or the ratio of beneficial to harmful to neutral mutations (most are neutral in real life studies).  In effect, it permits one to model evolution to see if the "fitness" of life increases or decreases using various parameters selected by the user. More information can be found at the website  http://mendelsaccount.sourceforge.net/ .

According to Dr. Larry Vardiman:

"When biologically realistic parameters are selected, Mendel's Accountant shows consistently that genetic deterioration is an inevitable outcome of the processes of mutation and natural selection. The primary reason is that most deleterious mutations are too subtle to be detected and eliminated by natural selection and therefore accumulate steadily generation after generation and inexorably degrade fitness." [red emphasis added]

The model is available at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/mendelsaccount and http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Miscellaneous/Mendel-s-Accountant.shtml, and may be downloaded to run locally or run on the server.  It is free for personal and classroom use.  A "Teachers Guide" is also being developed that should be available in 2009.  More information may be found on the project site or in Dr. Vardiman's full article The "Fatal Flaws" of Darwinian Theory. (here).

CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT

Local School Board Elections!  -  Local school boards around the state are now open for filing to run for your local school board.  In many communities, a single additional vote on the board could result in a conservative majority.  If you've ever remotely entertained the idea, now could be the time.  Hurry--the filing deadline is fast approaching.  Contact your local district for details in your district.

State School Board Elections! -  Several races for the Texas State School Board are in progress.  Based on our knowledge of the candidates positions, we show our picks for the districts below in bold font.  Please support these candidates!

District           GOP                                   Dem                              Libertarian
2        Peter Johnston web   Mary Helen Berlanga
6        Terri Leo             web                                             Mary Ann Bryan
7        David Bradley              Laura Ewing                   Richard R. Johnson
8        Barbara Cargill  web                                             Kim B. Stroman

If you reside in or have friends in any of these districts, please help the bolded candidates out at every opportunity.  You may note that in Districts 2 and 13, we have solid conservatives running against entrenched liberals who vote against mainstream and conservative Texans at nearly every turn.

BOOK REVIEW
IconsSmallICONS OF EVOLUTION by Dr. Jonathan Wells (Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from University of California-Berkeley) is a brilliant exposé of the poor science and in some cases, outright fraud that is found throughout the classic "proofs" of evolution that until very recently were in nearly all public school textbooks and still remain in some college level texts.

Phillip Johnson called it "one of the most important books ever written about the evolution controversy".

While Darwinists complained, some textbook publishers heeded Dr. Wells and have now removed some of what most people in America were deceived into believing were iron-clad proofs of evolution.  However, these "myths" remain in the minds of many adults, including biology teachers.  If you have not already read this, do so, and consider providing a copy to your high school biology teacher to read as well.

It is well-researched, references are abundantly footnoted, and a thorough index is included.  It may be ordered from Amazon here.

ROOTS & FRUITS of EVOLUTION - SCHOOL VIOLENCE
Darwins.Tree.of.Life
A belief in Darwinism has supported evil since the 1800s.  An example is that of school violence in America and abroad.  While Darwinists would not publicly support this nor encourage it, many of the school violence incidents in recent years were, at least in part, due to misguided students believing in evolution and carrying it to extremes, both in their conclusion that if we are nothing but random chemical reactions then there is no meaning in life, and that violence is justified in the "survival of the fittest" sense.  The Nobel prize-winning physicist, Dr. Steven Weinberg of UT-Austin, once wrote, "The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it seems pointless."   A devout atheist like Dr. Weinberg may think that makes sense, but to an impressionable teenager it may spell disaster.

The most infamous example of this disasterous result is the Columbine Colorado shootings.  The shooters in that case were devotees of Darwinism, with numerous diary entries to that effect along with claims that they were speeding up the process with their actions.  One of them even chose to wear a shirt that had "Natural Selection" emblazoned on it the day of the shooting.

The father of one of the victims sent a letter to the Texas State Board of Education that said, in part,

"Board members, ideas have consequences. Sometimes we don't like them, but to deny the link is literally fatal. I know this too well. The point is that if we continue to ignore the scientific weaknesses of Darwinism, in deference to teaching 19th century discredited science, God will use other means to get our attention. Bullying in the classroom is big news. Isn't it time we face the logical connection that if we teach "survival of the fittest" uncritically in the classroom, then some students may take this corrosive "kill or be killed" concept onto the playground or street?  (full text of letter here)

There are MANY more examples.  Benjamin Wiker's book "Moral Darwinism" can be ordered from Amazon
here.  John West's book, "Darwin Day in America," also addresses some of these issues and may be ordered from Amazon here.

ACADEMIC FREEDOM?

CensorshipTexas:  The Institute for Creation Research Graduate School (ICR-GS) continues to be summarily snubbed by the Governor Perry-appointed Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).  The latest twist is that we filed a "Public Information Act" request for correspondence on the issue to and from THECB staffers including Dr. Paredes, and the THECB has chosen not to release some of the requested information by invoking a loophole in the law.  Some information already obtained through press and other sources has revealed a pattern of favoritism toward the militant evolutionist viewpoint and discrimination against the ICR-GS application.

What else was in the THECB files that was so damaging as to have them choose to shield it from public scrutiny?  It has oft been said that "sunlight is the best disinfectant."  When 80% of Texans, including most evolutionists, think it is good to teach both strengths and weaknesses of evolution theories, and ICR is one of the only science teacher education programs in the state to prepare teachers to do just that, it is breathtakingly arrogant that an appointed board that serves at the pleasure of the Governor would openly go against the will of the people and DO the will of the Darwinists.  We call on the THECB to:

  • Stop hiding documents regarding the ICR application,

  • Immediately grant ICR an operating license in Texas, and

  • Promptly refund ICR legal costs in defending their position.

Information about how you can file your own public information act request with the THECB is located online from Greg Abbott's Attorney General's website here or the THECB website here.  It is your right and duty to keep our government checked, and the PIA is a powerful tool to help do so.

Other resources for you to consider how you might join in the current battle:

You can call the Governor's office at 800-252-9600 or contact them in other ways listed at the Governor's website hereICR's administrative appeal (details here and here).

More information can be found at the ICR website here or at their "Never Stop Questioning" portal (
click here) that lets one drill down to about any level of detail on many important questions of both science and philosophy.

"Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed":  The latest threat to "Expelled", a civil court case focusing on about 15 seconds of the song "Imagine", that sought as part of the remedy to keep Expelled from being distributed on DVD, has been dismissed by the presiding judge.

If you didn't see it in theaters, be sure to get the DVD when it comes out around Christmas or sooner.

HISTORY NOTES & QUOTES
Liberty Bell
Nearly everyone is familiar with the Liberty Bell, but do you know why it is called that, why it was cast, or what is around its top?

It is not simply that, as popular tradition has it, that the Bell was rung when our Declaration of Independence was first read publicly on July 8, 1776.

The Liberty Bell was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Assembly to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the State of Pennsylvania, (specifically their Charter of Privileges or state constitution).  As such, they provided that a Bible verse be cast into the bell.  They chose Leviticus 25:10, that says, "Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof".  Why that verse?  It was part of the instructions to ancient Israel of how to celebrate every 50 years, called the "jubilee".

The name "Liberty Bell" was adopted by abolitionists in the 1830s.  The origins and dating of the famous crack are disputed, but there is agreement that it grew too large to ring the bell in 1846 when rung in celebration of George Washington's birthday.

More information on the Liberty Bell may be found at the USHistory website here.
