New Texas Group Launches Drive for Biology Texts that Teach Evolution Accurately

Texans for Better Science Education (TBSE), a new citizens group, has launched a petition drive to support the State Board of Education in obtaining biology textbooks that teach evolution accurately.

"Textbooks currently under consideration contain misleading factual errors and outdated information about evolution that are an inexcusable embarrassment to sound science," said Ide Trotter, Ph.D., spokesman for the group.

"We invite all interested citizens to visit our website at www.strengthsandweaknesses.org and sign our electronic petition supporting accurate teaching about evolution," said Dr. Trotter. "By signing you will be sending a strong message to the State Board of Education that you will support them in taking a courageous stand for accurate science education. Bringing these texts into factual compliance with Texas law is not just a legal and scientific issue. It is truly a matter of academic freedom in science education which should be a concern of every thoughtful Texan," Trotter added.

Texas law requires that factual errors be corrected and both scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of theories and hypotheses be presented in approved texts. However, Darwinist activists have mounted a campaign of disinformation supporting approval of non-conforming texts, falsely asserting that there are efforts to insert creationism or intelligent design into textbooks.

"Let me make perfectly clear that TBSE is not a creationist group and we are not advocating including creationism or intelligent design in any textbooks. We are trying to encourage and support the Board of Education in correcting factual errors and making sure that a scientifically accurate picture of evolution is presented. Any claims to the contrary are simply untrue," stated Dr. Trotter.

Along with its petition, TSBE is encouraging people to sign up and testify at the Board of Education's final textbook hearing on September 10. How citizens can sign up to testify is found online at www.strengthsandweaknesses.org . The last day to sign up to testify is August 21.
