June 2, 2004 - Texas Education Agency Action Leaves Known Errors in Books and Promises Broken, and Credibility of Agency Shattered URGENT: For the second time, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has ignored the clear will of the State Board of Education (SBOE) and the TEA's promises to them and has recommended that Texas uncritically adopt all textbooks, including those of two publishers who never responded to errors and one publisher who agreed their book contained errors but refused to correct them. Further, a very biased evolutionist professor, hand-picked by the TEA to defend the books, has levied severe criticism for the way the TEA and the publishers handled the textbook review process, and agreed with at least one error pointed out by the Discovery Institute, but is ignoring even the errors that "both sides" agree upon! The evolutionist, who signed a letter against us during last fall's adoption process, said "I find myself in the unenviable position to defend the poor scholarship of other authors and the obstinacy of their publishers." Why did he feel like he had to do this? The idea was to review the textbooks objectively and improve them accordingly, not "defend poor scholarship"! Textbooks are required to be free from factual errors, and while numerous errors have been corrected, other known errors remain in the books. The biology books, which are estimated to cost Texas taxpayers around $30,000,000 in 2004 alone, do not conform to Texas law, to the wishes of 82% of Texans, (according to the Zogby organization), to the wishes of the SBOE, or the promises of the TEA itself! An unnamed TEA textbook curriculum staff has recommended ignoring the remaining errors and printing the flawed books. These books will be used in Texas classrooms for the next six to ten years. If you think your children and grandchildren deserve better, then we ask that you contact Governor Rick Perry and his appointees at the TEA. This agency is clearly out of control and is squandering taxpayer money. Please politely express your desire for enforcing existing Texas law and require errors be removed and both strengths and weaknesses to be taught in the schools. Some contact information is listed below. Thank you. Very truly yours, Texans for Better Science Education
