November 5, 2004 News Update

TBSE:

We just received word that this year's health textbooks have been adopted by the Texas State Board of Education, SBOE.  The social conservatives, led by Mrs. Terri Leo (Rep., Spring) and helped by Mrs. Kyleen Wright and her Texans for Life Coalition, had defended Texas law requiring abstinence be taught, and sought last minute changes to remove language viewed as accepting homosexual lifestyles.   Liberals had waged an intense lobbying effort to have the books include "Abstinence Plus" curricula, which is little more than a repackaged "Safe Sex" message.

According to an AP story, Mrs. Leo was pleased with the changes, which included removing language the state board viewed as violating state law defining marriage.  "Marriage has been defined in Texas so it should also be defined in our health textbooks that we use as marriage between a man and a woman," Leo said.

A member of Concerned Women for America Texas South  said "Our prayers have been heard - and a very courageous young lady has stood on the front lines for all of us!"

Mrs. Leo is scheduled to be on NBC National news tonight (5:00 or 5:30 Houston).  Some stories on the internet relating to the vote are listed below.

Thank you.
